Attānañce piyam jaññā 앗따난쩨 삐양 잔냐
rakkheyya naṃ surakkhitaṃ 락케이야 낭 수락키땅
tiṇṇaṃ aññataraṃ yāmaṃ 띤앙 안냐따랑 야망
paṭijaggeyya pandito. 빧이작게이야 빤디또.
자기야말로 가장 소중한 줄 알진대
자기를 잘 보호해야 한다.
그들은 세 단계 가운데 한 단계만이라도
악행으로부터 자기를 지혜롭게 지켜야 했을 것이다.
If a man hold himself dear, let him watch himself carefully;
during one at least out of the three watches a wise man should be watchful.
12-158
Attānameva paṭhamaṃ 앗따나메와 빠타망
patirūpe nivesaye 빠띠루뻬 니웨사예
athaññamanusāseyya 아탄냐마누사세이야
na kilisseyya paṇḍito. 나 낄리쎄이야 빤디또.
자기를 먼저 올바르게 이룬 뒤
다른 사람을 가르쳐야 한다.
다른 사람들이 비난할 일을
지혜로운 사람은 아예 하지 않는다.
Let each man direct himself first to what is proper,
then let him teach others;
thus a wise man will not suffer.
12-159
Attānañce thatā kayirā 앗따난쩨 따타까이라
yathāññamanusāsati 야탄냐마누사사띠
sadanto vata dametha 수단또 와따 다메타
attā hi kira duddamo. 앗따 히 까라 듯다모.
다른 사람을 가르치는 사람은
자기의 가르침에 합당하게 행동해야 한다.
자기를 철저하게 단련시킨 사람만이
다른 사람을 단련시킬 수 있는 법.
자기를 단련시키기는 참으로 어렵다.
If a man make himself as he teaches others to be, then,
being himself well subdued, he may subdue (others);
one's own self is indeed difficult to subdue.
12-160
Attā hi attano nātho 앗따 히 앗따노 나토
ko hi nātho paro siyā 꼬 히 나토 빠로 시야
attana hi sudantena 앗따나 히 수단떼나
nāthaṃ labhati dullabhaṃ 나탕 랍바띠 둘라방
진정 자기야말로 자기의 의지처,
어떻게 남을 자기의 의지처로 삼으랴?
자기를 잘 단련시킴으로써만
자기를 의지처로 만들 수 있는 것.
이는 실로 성취하기 어렵다.
Self is the lord of self, who else could be the lord?
With self well subdued, a man finds a lord such as few can find.
12-161
Attanā hi kataṃ pāpaṃ 앗따나 히 까땅 빠빵
attajaṃ attasambhavaṃ 앗따장 앗따삼바왕
abhimatthati dummedhaṃ 아버맛타띠 둠메당
vajiraṃva'smamayaṃ maniṃ. 와지랑와스마마이양 만잉
자기가 저지른 악행의 결과는 자기가 받는다.
그 악행은 자기가 저지른 것이기에.
어리석은 자는 스스로 저지른 악행으로 자기를 파멸시킨다,
마치 금강석이 다른 보석을 깎듯이.
The evil done by oneself, self-begotten,
self-bred, crushes the foolish,
as a diamond breaks a precious stone.
12-162
Yassa accantadussilyaṃ 야싸 앗짠따두씰리양
māluvā sālamivotthataṃ 말루와 살라미옷타땅
karoti so tatha'ttānaṃ 까로띠 소 따탓따낭
yathā naṃ icchati diso. 야타 낭 잇차띠 디소.
계행이 없는 자가 욕망에 넘침이여.
마치 말루와가 살라나무에 엉키듯
스스로 자기가 저지른 악행에 엉켜 든다,
마치 자기 원수에게 그같이 되라고 저주한 것처럼.
He whose wickedness is very great brings himself down to that state
where his enemy wishes him to be,
as a creeper does with the tree which it surrounds.
12-163
Sukarāni asādhūni 수까라니 아사두니
attano ahitāni ca 앗따노 아히따니 짜
yaṃ ve hitañca sādhuñca 양 웨 히딴짜 사둔짜
taṃ ve paramadukkaraṃ 땅 웨 빠라마둑까랑.
사악한 자는 자기에게나 남에게
이익이 없는 악행을 하기가 쉽고
자기에게나 남에게 이익되는
착한 일을 하기는 실로 어렵다.
Bad deeds, and deeds hurtful to ourselves, are easy to do;
what is beneficial and good, that is very difficult to do.
12-164
Yo sāsanaṃ arahataṃ 요 사사낭 아라한땅
ariyānaṃ dhammajīvinaṃ 아리야낭 담마지위낭
paṭikkosati dummedho 빠띄꼬사띠 둠메도
diṭṭhiṃ nissāya pāpikaṃ 딧팅 니싸야 빠삐깡
phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva 팔라니 깟타까쎄와
attaghātāy phallati. 앗따가따야 팔라띠.
자기의 삿된 견해 때문에
아라한의 훌륭한 가르침과
성스러운 담마를 의지해 가는 사람들을 꾸짖으면
스스로 파멸을 불러올 뿐,
마치 대나무가 열매를 맺고 스스로 죽어 버리듯.
The foolish man who scorns the rule of the venerable (Arahat),
of the elect (Ariya), of the virtuous, and follows false doctrine,
he bears fruit to his own destruction, like the fruits of the Katthaka reed.
12-165
Attanā hi kataṃ pāpaṃ 앗따나 히 까땅 빠빵
attanā saṃkilissati 앗따나 상낄리싸띠
attanā akataṃ pāpaṃ 앗따나 아까땅 빠빵
attanāva visujjhati 아따나와 위숫자띠
suddhī asuddhi paccattarṃ 숫디 아숫디 빳짯땅
nāñño aññaṃ visodhaye. 냔노 안냥 위소다예.
실로 자기에 의해 악이 행해지고
자기에 의해 스스로 타락되며
자기에 의해 악이 행해지지 않고
자기에 의해 스스로 청정해진다.
청정과 청정치 않음은 자기에게 달린 것
어느 누구도 다른 사람을 청정케 할 수는 없다.
By oneself the evil is done, by oneself one suffers;
by oneself evil is left undone, by oneself one is purified.
Purity and impurity belong to oneself, no one can purify another.
12-166
Attadatthaṃ paratthena 앗따닷탕 빠랏테나
bahunāpi na hāpaye 바후나삐 나 하빠예
attadatthamabhiññāya 앗따닷타마빈냐야
sadatthapasuto siyā. 사닷타빠수또 시야.
크든 작든 간에 다른 이의 이익을 위한답시고
자기의 참다운 이익을 소홀히 말라.
자기의 참다운 이익이 무엇인지 분명히 알았으면
최선의 노력으로써 그것을 성취하라.
Let no one forget his own duty for the sake of another's, however great;
let a man, after he has discerned his own duty,
be always attentive to his duty.
